Westlake-Riverhills Bushcare Group

History of the group

Pullen Reach escarpment

Westlake-Riverhills Bushcare Group was the first bushcare group to form in the Centenary suburbs.

It was established by Save Our Riverfront Bushland (SORB) in 1993, under a Brisbane City Council bushcare program later named 'Habitat Brisbane'. WRBG is now one of six bushcare groups which have since formed in the district as listed in the links at left.

The focus of WRBG's bushcare work is along Pullen Reach of the Brisbane River. This one-kilometre section of riverfront bushland was part of a total 2.7km of continuous riverfront in the suburbs of Westlake and Riverhills which was protected from development in 1992 as a result of the efforts of SORB.

The Coucal Trail
In 1999, a Green Corps project team of young adults developed a walking path they named the Coucal Trail, running for a length of some 400 metres from Balaton Street to Callabonna Street.

Following a proposal submitted by SORB/WRBG in 2002, Brisbane City Council subsequently developed an extension of the Coucal Trail north to Tennent Street, Westlake, which was opened in 2005.
